"Washington State Eases Tax Burden for Medical Cannabis Patients"

In a significant move to support medical cannabis users, Washington State has enacted legislation reducing the excise tax on medical cannabis products. Effective June 6, 2024, House Bill 1453 exempts registered medical cannabis patients from the state's 37% excise tax on qualifying products. This change aims to alleviate financial barriers for patients relying on medical cannabis for therapeutic purposes.

To benefit from this exemption, patients must:

  • Be registered in the Department of Health’s Medical Cannabis Authorization Database.

  • Purchase products from retailers holding a valid medical endorsement issued by the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board.

This initiative underscores Washington's commitment to supporting medical cannabis patients by reducing financial obstacles and promoting access to necessary treatments.
